Is the remington 40XB worth the money?

From what I heard, it used to be "the" sniper rifle used by us. If that is indeed the case I would think so.

I have one chambered in 25-06 AI. I bought it used for 600 dollars. I think mine is well worth the money. To heavy to hunt with, but a lot of fun at the range.

For about the same amount of money you can build a good accurate rifle if you have a M700 or M70 action laying around. In the larger calibers, 40x"s only have to meet .75 moa to get out of the custom shop. The rifle on the right is a 40 XB chambered in 300 WBY on a single shot short action and on average is a .75 moa shooter with a few 1/2 inchers thrown in. The rifle on the left is a built M700 and with shoot 1/2 moa and under without question as the targets can attest. It's chambered in 6.5 Gibbs. I have about the same amount of $$$ in each of them. One you can get right away and the other is going to take a little patience. It's really up to you.

Scott78,
Let me clarify my answer a bit. Would I buy a new 40XB? No, I'd have a custom built and probably have it quicker than waiting on Remington. If a tack driver is what you seek and you have the money, build a custom that's built specifically for you. When you get it, Practice, Practice , Practice. When you get to the point that you and the rifle know what each is going to do at all times....Then you'll have a "tack driver".

Personally, i think "IF" you haven't already been shooting groups for quite a while to know how it's done, you'd be better off with a 700 varmit. They can be tuned up to shoot very very good!!! Why burn up a "premium" bbl. learning to shoot groups???

Once you have all the gear, and have some experience, then use the varmit to build a custom on, or just plain build a custom on a diff. action.

Good advice. Some of those Remingon VS's will shoot under 1/2"; and later, you can use the stock and the action as the basis for a top drawer custom rifle.

swampman...actually "brand new in the box" 40X's can purchased more or less over the counter. I have seen places have alot of them in stock. No biggie on getting aa 40X in 2 days, now then a custom might take 3 months to a year or more depending on who is doing the smith work.

doublea,
I didn't know that. Back when I would have bought one new, they were custom shop only.
