Default Sighting in a .243

How high should I sight it in to hit at 100 yds? Is there a standard height, or is it more of a personal preference?

Thanks for your help!

Mainly personal preference. I set all my rifles dead on at 100 and then just hold over to compensate for distances beyond that.

My ballistics software says setting it 1.37" high at 100 yards will have it hitting dead on at 200. That's using Remington ammo loaded with 90 gr. Nosler ballistic tips. Most people I know try to set their rifles to hit dead on at 200.

What are you hunting? What kind of ammo. are you using? How long is your barrel? Good luck.

a .243 is a nice flat shooting gun. but if you sight in at 100 yards it has already peaked at 85 yards and will be dead on at 100. after that it is all downhill. it will be somewhere around 2 1/2 and 3 inches low at 200. sight it in about an inch high at 100 and it will be about a inch or 1 1/2 low at 200. this way you can aim dead on all the way out to 200. and this is with a 75 grain boattail. like i have said before if your gun is sighted at 2 or 3 hundred yards the bullet has not peaked yet at 100 yards. but zeroed at 100 yards the angle of your barrel is to low for the bullet to gain anymore..

I've posted this link before. If you want the most out of your trajectory, use this table to set your point of impact.[link]http://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_trajectory_table.htm[/link]

That guy knows his stuff! I used his technique to sight in my 7mm mag and am able to shoot from muzzle to 305 yds. with no more than 3" rise or fall. That's incredible! Anything under 305 yds. just hold dead on and squeeze slowly. I like that! That sight does have some awesome information. I found the link right here on this forum. There are some great people here.

I have a Savage Model 11 .243 Win Mag - Bushnell 6 x 18 power scope - Harris Bipod

I have mine sighted in dead on at 250 yrds - i am an 1" high at 100 and and about 1" low at 300 yrds with 100 grain ammo - If I am shooting 75 grain ammo or lighter I get an even flatter trajectory.

I use 100 grain because I mainly use my rig for Coyotes but I also use it when I go to PA for Whitetail - Works great on both.
