I never said it was the most built gun ever. I just consider it the most successful civillian gun ever. I hadn't really given much thought to military arms.

I don't take anything Field and Stream says seriously. This list is about as flawed as their optics roundup and quite frankly shows that these authors have little knowledge of what a well made firearm or the impact of such has had on shooters. Like RA said I think they are taking a hit on the crack pipe before they published this. BTW I have owned 5 of the top ten and don't agree with that list at all.

Well, if I were to formulate a top 10 of ALL guns every made, it'd go something like this (in no perticular order):

1.) Anything designed by John Moses Browning

2.) Colt 1911A1

3.) M1 Garand

4.) M1903 Springfield

5.) M16A2 (and variants)

6.) Remington 870

7.) Glock Safe-Action pistols

8.) Mauser 98

9.) Kalishnikov AK-47 (and variants)

10.) Colt SAA "Peacemaker"

It is noteworthy that the list is not pitches as the list of the BEST 50 guns. Part of the point or weighting going into the rankings is the influence or importance of the gun on American gun culture. For example, the 1903 Springfield is listed because it is given credit for converting Americans from lever action guns to bolt action guns.

i read the beginning of the article and he said they are his opinons and they are hunting weapons....mauser 98 should been first....he admits that dang near every bolt action copied the 98 for their design...some of the choices did blow my mind a little......but it made for a nice read and laugh while i was.....well....busy......you know where guys read magazines......

Drift you gotta come up with a new #2. The 1911 fits in your own #1 category!

I think Mr. Browning's middle name was Moses for a reason. He lead EVERYONE out of the dark and into the promised land!

22.Ruger Mark I
WTF? Its basicly not much different than a MKII except that it is limited to a 9 shot magazine. HighStandards and Colt Woodsmans are far superior pisols[:'(]

I guess I can count my blessings that I no longer subscribe to that crap magazine.
