I really like the 7-08, and the 280 cal is my favorite as well.

A Couple of thoughts, I have a little more experience with 7x57, a very similar cartridge. The performance will surprise you, to the point I will say you can shoot at 300 yards VERY nearly as easily as the 7 Rem Mag with handloads. The 7-08 is a more current offerring than 7X57 so the shelf ammo can be at higher pressures, that is the main reason the 7-08 stays in current production instead of 7x57.

For non-magnum offerrings (which are generally much more efficient and give up very little to Magnum's that are extremely overbore capacity) the 7-08 or 280 Rem are both good choices, add to that the 7x57 if you reload. Add to that the thought of improving any of the non-magnum offerrings and they are very interesting.

Too bad there are not more in LH versions...

The Ultra Light Ruger, it sure looks neat, but a 16.5 inch barrel is not what I would suggest in a big game rifle.

The 77 in all weather is a nice gun, I have a couple. I had triggers worked (adds little to cost). Storage suggestion tip for Rugers, when closing bolt, pull the trigger to release tension on sear and firing spring (keep safety in mind when doing this please). The Ruger safety does not lift the pressure off the sear as lets say the winchester or Mauser actions do. Although very, very unusual, I am aware of 1 sear that eventually broke, who knows for certain if the constant pressure was part of the reason...

IMO.

The Ruger M77® Mark II Compact 7mm-08. This is going to be strickly a big game hunting rifle.
I know I want a 7mm. I am not sure on the the bulliet ie. Rem Mag, WSM, 08, ext. I am open to sugestions.
Also what do you think of the Ruger M77 Mark II All-Weather 7mm WSM and M77® Mark II Ultra Light 30-06.

I don't like WSM's in the Ruger lineup because they have 22" barrels for one. The Ultralight 30-06 while a pretty gun there are lots of better options out there for light weight and I amnot sure i want a 20" barrelled 30-06 in a 6 lb package.

Ruger needs to make the 7mm08 in a different model besides compact.
They did. I have a Ruger Ultralight in 7mm-08but it was a very limited run.
Yeah some people have all the luck. They were a very limited run by Davidson's. They are all gone and no more expected.Frizzellr thanks for the heads up on that other one 7mm08.Consider it sold.LOL.

Not sure what you mean by affordable ammo but I own a 7mm Remington Mag and as of last night, a 7x57. Ammo here runs $13-$30 for the 7 mag and $13-$20 for the Mauser. Last summer our Wal-mart had Federal Premium 160 gr partitions for $17 per box (7 mag) and Core-lokt Ultras for $20. Not a huge diffence from your standard calibers.

If you are welded to the Compact you'd better forget anything bigger than the 7mm-08, there just isn't enough barrel to burn the extra powder in the full sized cases. That said it'll kill anything that walks, although you might want to think about starting a fight with an animal that can shoot back. You know, has teeth, claws, trunks, horns and hooves that kind of thing. [:-]

So I think I am lost here. Are you saying that the 22" barrel is not long enough for a 7mm 08?
Sorry I am a newbi as you can see.
Thanks,
Jon
