upgrades for my NEW COLT 1911
my grandpa got me a colt .45 70 series.. government.. what should i do to it? are there any kits you can buy that have the barrel, slide, and all the other cool stuff i have no idea what i'm buying with? i'll have a gun smith put it all on.. i'm not gonna try to use this gun for a real competition gun, just something to go shoot with at tournaments.. not looking to sink a lot of money into it.. it doesn't jam or anything, i put about 150 rounds through it today.. cheap precision delta ammo.. i'm going to the police academy this summer so he wants me to get pretty good with it.. i'm getting a highway patrol friend of mine to teach me how to shoot it better, i think i'm jerking to the left.. but thats all in due time.. thanks in advance guys.. brandon

Ahh, Grasshopper, at your experience level, upgrades are going to be money spent with no advantage to you. Spend the money on ammunition, or reloading equipment for ammunition for the handgun. When you get to the 10,000 round mark, THEN look at upgrades. Walk first, then run.

Ditto, Ditto.I have to agree with Charley.Until you get familiar shooting handguns leave it stock. You can wrap allot of money into these upgrades until you know what you're doing it's just throwing money away.

Take it to your local gunsmith and have him custom fit the frame to the slide, put a nice beavertail safety on it, De-horn it for carry (melt down), lighten the trigger to 3.5 pounds, checker the fronstrap (30 lpi), put a Karte barrel on it... and accurize it to 2.5 inches at 50 yards...
Or you can just enjoy your first pistol for what it is... The best design ever!!!! Thanks John Browning!!!!
Seriously ditto to what everyone else has said... You will find the 1911 the best design ever... Caution though, they are addictive!!!

The Colt is as reliable and as good of a shooter as its going to get. I would buy a case of ammo and start practicing with it.
If the Colt has tiny sights, then new sights and possibly a trigger job might help you shoot it better now in the short term, but everything else you could do is just expense and fluff.
