TheVari-xIII has a one piece tube that is why it is so much more than the 3 piece VX2 the Vari X II has a one piece tube so i don't know what Leupold is trying to do .

How's the durability of the Nikon scopes, how do they compare to Leupolds warranty and reputation? When I bought my vari-x II a couple of years ago I compared it to the buckmaster and I must say that the BM had sightly better optics (clearer) but I was concerned about the durability(not hearing any pro's or con's)so I spent the extra money and bought the tried and true vari-x II. I'll consider the Nikon's the next time that I buy a scope but I hope that their reputation isn't tanted.

Fellas,yours truly has learned a thing or 2 today. I asked a product specialist at Leupold 2 questions...One about light gathering info and the other about 1 piece scope tube on the VAriXIII. Below isthe reply.
"What is the difference between the VX-II and Vari-X III"
The VX-II has the same tactile, audible, click-style adjustments as the Vari-X III, but there are a couple of differences. The Vari-X III is a one piece maintube, the VX-II is 3 piece construction. The Vari-X III has Multicoat 4 on all lenses, while the VX-II has Multicoat 4 on the external lenses and magnesium fluoride on the internal lenses. The difference in lens coatings results in the Vari-X III having approximately 92% total light transmission, the VX-II having approximately 86%. Both scope lines can have custom shop services performed.
Based upon that and always believing that my VArixIII's were a 2pc tube I think the VXIII is a great bargain and I will buy them until the cows come home. It is lighter than its competitors, has by far more eye relief and has the best customer service in the industry.Take it from me very few people have bought a greater assortment of scopes than me and I have had to deal with the customer service depts . If I had to buy a VXII though and it was not a hard kicking caliber I would seriously look at a Nikon.

IF you are going to buy a Leupold think again/ They told me 82% they also told oldelkhunter 86%. Would you want to buy a scope from a company who can't even tell you the light transmission of the same scope right the first time??? I don't know about you but i am staying away from Leupold if thats what i am going to hear two different answers for the same scope??? They are good scopes but i will be sticking with Nikon!

Matters of tolerance my friend. Its like this, if you go down the hallway at the company I work and ask the spec of a Laser's output power in a certain configurations to 10 engineers, including myself, you will get at least 5 different answers. Why, because the supplier has a spec. It can't be as hardcore as 87% solid. It has to be +/- something. Also, each one of us has our own way of testing. Our own level of perfection. So sooner or later, we adopt a number. Its not out of the question for specs to not match in big companies. As far as staying away from Leupold. Why would I? They have done the job for me for 20 years. Its pretty adopted in the shooting industry that they are a first rate scope compared to the European scopes. So what is the spec tolerance for that Nikon. I know from Experience that it can't be 95% solid. Have you measured it?

OLDELKHUNTER oops i'm yelling.
did they tell you the difference between vari x II and the vxII's? are the old vari x 's three piece tubes like the new vx's?i never paid attention to mine. i like it and was going to buy a vxII for a 308 in a model seven. but i know where a good used matte vari x is.

I put a nikon monarch on my 45-70 three years ago I load pretty stiff loads and shoot alot with no trouble. They are one of the best buys going. check out www.theopticzone.com good prices
