RE: the most accurate cartridge
I have a custom 308 Norma Mag that is VERY ACCURATE. It has fairly heavy recoil, but tolerable. It is noisy as hell.
I can even find factory loads for it here...Well, they're actually loaded by a company...but they're of excellent quality. I think they are $30 for 20, so not cheap.

RE: the most accurate cartridge
You know, as a custom rifle builder I really debate this question with my self, ya I know that is a sign of insanity but that aside I wonder if there is any one cartridge that has it over all others from the accuracy perspective. The rifles I build are expected for the most part to shoot half inch or less at 100 yards, it is not that hard to achomplish with attention to details. I have found that components in some calibers are on the sloppy side and these things have to be sorted out. Aside from that I have found that a lot of accuracy is from the shooters tolerance to shooting. I am not refering to recoil here though that enters in to the picture but more to time at the bench and practice.
How many shooters put several thousand rounds of .224 lead down range per year vs .308 belted Magnum in the same quanity. Some of the big stuff.308 and larger, like the .375 H&H have shown increadiable long range accuracy but again how many of us can shoot it well, as compaired to a .222? I do not leave myself out of this equation for though I am a custom rifle builder and specialise in stock fit and dangerous game rifles I am not exempt. Sure I can shoot a three shot one hole group with a .416 Rigby but please do not ask me to shoot more then a few in a string, now a .223, well that is another story.
What do you think, how much is the shooter pluss the intensity of the cartridge?

RE: the most accurate cartridge
I don't think any cartridge is inherently more accurate than any other. There are some that the factories took more pains loading for than others, and they gained a reputation. Of course a real accuracy nut uses homemade ammo nowadays.
