I like the Rem Core-Lokt 170gr rounds. Or, should I say, my Marlin 30-30 likes them. I got that sweet rifle sighted in to be just about an inch high at 50 yards with groups the size of a quarter. So, at 100 yards, I'll be right on the money.

I wonder how Federal's perform out of the classic 30-30?

The difference is between einy and meany, or maybe miny and moe.

You will have to shoot both to find out which shoots best from your rifle. However, if accuracy is no factor, be advised that neither of those two choices is superior for shooting Texas whitetails - a .308" 180-grain bullet has all the performance and MORE for such uses. personally, I'd use a 150 or 165 grain bullet on those small deer out there.
Good advice! You don't need a 180 grain .30 caliber bullet to kill any whitetail here in Texas.

eldegullo and Charley, i was thinking about a 180 grain bullet out of the 300 win mag because of the higher velocities and close range shots

Also who said the deer in Texas are small? Dimmit county in South Texas has produced the second most booners out of all counties in the usa

texhookem- body wise the texas deer are smaller, and once you take those huge antlers off of them they weigh a whole lot less the 180 gr. shells would be my choose.

i would also go with the corelokt

I have had great luck with the core lokt's both with accuracy and on game performance.

I aggree I would go with the Core Lokt's. I have had a couple of 250 - 300yd one shot kills on elk with 180 grn Core Lokt from my 300 weatherby.

heres me accuracy i get with core lokts, I get even better accuracy now since i started rolling my own. But the core lokts are my choice of factory ammo.

Well I shoot a .243 and I've used both corelokts and Powerpoint. I had been shooting Corelokts for a few months and in terms of accuracy I wasn't all to impressed, I wound up with some rather large groups of around 3-5 inches. I did however manage to hit an 8 point awhile ago and dropped it on spot.
The other day I had to buy some more ammo so I went ahead and got powerpoints. My groups immediantely dropped down to around 1-2 inches which was a pretty major improvement... I'm yet to kill a deer using them, so I can't commet on kiling power, but in terms of accuracy, Powerpoints do the trick fo rme.
