Scope power

RE: Scope power
I was recently torn between topping my Ithaca 12ga. with either a Burris 3-9X40 or a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7X32.
I thought that 3-9 may be too much for a shotgun, but after some researching and conversing with other "slug-only hunters" out in the Midwest, the 3-9 was the most reasonable scope.
The Burris was also a helluva deal at Natchez...still on sale too , and comparable with the Nikon Monarch series. Has better eye relief than the Elites, almost 4 inches.
BUT...consider your hunting set-ups. If you routinely shoot past 100 yards, then go with the 3-9 just because it has a larger objective and will add light gathering properties, which will aid in overall vision. Also consider that if your eyes are bad now with contacts, they probably will not improve in 10 years. 5 power may be fine now, but you may want 7/8 power as you "age" [&:]
IF you shoot mostly 50-75 pokes with an occasional long opportunity, you may want a compact scope. The highest compact I know of is a 2-7X33.
good luck...

RE: Scope power
I am ussually not a big fan of Leupolds.. I personally think they are overpriced... Having said that their "rifle scopes" make great shotgun/muzzleloading scopes because of their amazing eye relief. This holds the same for the Simmons Aetec line.
If you look at the other scopes out their (Bushnell, Nikon, Burris, Sightron, etc.) make sure you get the shotgun/muzzleloader version since thier "riflescope" scopes have relatively short eye relief (~3-3.5")
