Default slugs for 870

Just wondering if anyone knows how 12 guage 3 inch federal barnes expander (vital shok) slugs shoot out of the fully rifled remington 870 barrel?

Anyone have really good results with a certain slug out of this gun?

All shotguns even the same model like different ammo. You would have to try different slugs to see what your shotgun likes. I have a Remington 11-87 with the rifled/cantilever barrel, and I use LIGHTFIELD slugs, I took a few deer, and a NJ black bear with them last year. Remington has a habit of undersizing there slugs, also there is a habit that there slugs work good in there shotguns, try there buckhammer, copper solid, or ultra core-lokt

QT,

This past spring I Purchased the 870 "Special Purpose" 12 gauge. In past 3 weeks I have tested/shot 5 brands and shot approx 35-45 rounds. This past week I bought 2 boxes of Lightfields and 2 boxes Rem copper solids, both 2-3/4. These seemed to be the top choice for this gun.

I let the gun cool between shots and cleaned every 3rd or 4th shot. Shot 2 boxes of Lightfields with best groups at 2-3" at 65 yrds. Not bad but wasn't that impressed considering I'll be shooting in the 100yrd range with this gun. I ran 4 copper solids thru gun with 1/4-1/2" groups! I'm impressed!

Seems this particular 870 loves copper solids and the Lightfields ain't bad.

Same results here AJ52. Lightfields gave adequate accuracy of 3"-4" at 100 yards and copper solids around 1.5". This in my browning gold sluggun, and 870 sluggun.

But 3" copper solids opens up to 6" groups in both guns. 3" federals the same. ONlylikes 2 3/4".

bigcountry,
I gave up on 3 inchers years ago. Was not impressed with 3" groups and most kick like a freekin mule.

While field testing the 870 the 1st time I noticed the lighter loads always produced better groups. I don't remember brand, but I found some sabots on the other side of my plywood shooting board - Not Good! I checked to see where the Rem copper solids were dropping, and all 4 looked good and dropped at around 30 yrds tops. I'll be shooting out of 2-3 stands where shots could be 100-125 yrds. If these copper solids get the job done at that range I'm not switchin, touching or changing nuttin!
