While length of the barrel may not make a difference, weight of the shotgun will as Canwoodsman stated.
I have to admit that I don't like the argument that "you won't feel it when shooting at game." While true, we all need to practice to get good enough to shoot at game and you will "feel it" when shooting at clay targets. As others have said there are many ways to tame felt recoil.
