RE: What is the best 30-06 load for deer?
I have shot ALOT of deer from 10yds too 400 with my old 06 and with bullets from handloaded 130grn hollow points too 220grn Corelokts. The majority of this time was in the 80s and early 90s so the newer bullets were'nt available then and likewise I shot ALOT of game with the 165 BTSP Federal Prems. But I have since used those "newer bullets" in other guns ranging from a 25/06 too my Lazzeroni Warbird. I just "re-armed" my ol 06 for duty this year (after sitting idle in my gunsafe for 10 years). Based on my previous experience with them and the fact that I like to shoot THRU deer from any range at any position offered so I went with the new Federal Vital Shok 180grn Barnes Triple Shock.
I am on my second year with the TSX' of the 150grn variety in my Warbird (and 4 seasons with the 130X Bullet at 4k before that) and they kill like LIGHTNING and the bullet simply wont come apart, even at 3800fps. Typically 180s are VERY accurate in just about any loading in most 30cals. I know from buddies and customers that the new Accubond offerings are great performers as well. I have a good freind and co-worker who just this summer filled two dozen crop-damage tags here in west TN with a new 300WSM Abolt II with the 180 Accubonds and they were devastating. Scirrocos are also another top performer if you want "ballistic tips" in my opinion. I just despise the previous generation of "ballistic tips" and would stay away from any that werent of the bonded or partitioned type construction.
Let dat ol 06 eat,
