Default The 300 mags.

Need some input on the short 300 mags. I would like to move up to a 300 magnum cartridge and am looking at the 300RSAUM or perhaps the 300WSM. Am not really interested in the long 300 mags such as the Win. or the Weatherby. Also please comment on some of the rifles available in these two calibers - but not the 'lightweights'. I need a gun that will soak up some of the recoil and a barrel long enough to give out the ballistic advantage of the cartridge. Thanks.

I love em. Hard to make em shoot bad reloading wise. If you got a mod 70 in WSM classic, it should have some extra wieght. But the round is intended to be shot in a short action which most are lights.

I'm shooting a 300 Ultra. Long case/action, and good recoil, but the energy down range is outstanding. Almost everything comes with synthetic stocks now. I had a break put on and brought the recoil down to about that of a 308. If you're wanting to put loads of energy along way down range, this has proven to be a good round.

Highpower, I also shoot a RUM, and if I had it to do over, I would have got a WSM. But now I have a custom gun in it, and dies, and tons of research and loading data, so I went with it. I have much harder time finding a tackdriver load for a RUM than I do with a WSM.

IMO, there's n point in getting a .300 short magnum if you already have a .30/'06. If you want to get a .300 Magnum, at least get a .300 Win. or .308 Norma. The .300 Weatherby or .300 Ultra is even better.

I made myself one earlier this year and the recoil is perfectly acceptable. It doesn't kick any harder than my .270 but the stock was made to fit me and it does have a decelerator recoil pad on it.

It is a great cartridge. I chose the WSM over the longer cousins because I don't like a belted case. Just a personal preference I guess. I also chose the WSM over the Remington SAUM simply because it has a huge lead in sales, rifles chambered for the cartridge, and factory ammo being loaded for it. I believe that all of the major gun manufacturers chamber a rifle for the WSM line except for Remington. If one is going to fall by the wayside it is going to be the SAUM.

I realy like my model 70, its my first winchester but definetly not my last. Its the 270 shortmag featherweight. For about 30-45$ dollars more you can step up to the Model 70 LAMINATE shortmag, the stock adds a little more weight. Add a good Simbs recoil pad and start with the light loads and work your way up.

Buddy of mine just got the 300 WSM and the accuracy is impressive. I like the caliber very much, but you can run into bullet depleteing case capacity issues especially with heavier bullets compared to the longer 300 mags.

Not to start an argument here but meerly want to add some input on this. We all here this all the time, that the WSM's do not have enough powder capasity for the heavier bullets like the 300 Win mag does. While this may be true, if a person needs more bullet weight than a premium 180 grain bullet to cleanly kill any animal that one would be hunting with any 300 mag that person needs to step up to a 338, 35, or 375. A 180 grain nosler partition, Barnes, TBBC, or any of the other premium bullets will kill any animal this continent offers us to hunt and do it with authority.

I have to agree with both of you guys. With a 200 accubond, you will start crunching powders, but I kill moose with 180gr. I did once with a 200gr.
