Default All around rifle.

Hey guys,
I want to buy my first high power and just wanted some advice. I want a bolt action; preferably an '06. I would like to keep the budget around $300 without the scope. What is the best rifle for me? What else is going to be comparable to an '06 (range, accuracy, punch, ammo pricing, etc.) Thanks for the help.

Your gonna hear this about a thousand times, but go with the savage 110. Im fixin to buy one,you cant beat their accuracy for the price. As far as a comparable round,im gettin mine in .270,which prefer over the '06. Shoots a little flatter and i love my ruger m77 .270.

How big of game can you take with the .270? How much range does it have? Thanks

Well the savage will be just about perfect and the old 06 has taken everything in the world. So you can't go wrong with that. I like other calibers as the 06 is just boring to me but it has and can do everything. Good luck You are on the right track.

I own a Savage 110 in .270win. and it is my all around rifle. The .270 is based on the '06 case necked down slightly, but the '06 has the advantage of more bullet weights available to it.Not to start a contraversy, but my hunting partner dropped a very large bull elk almost in its tracks with his .270.With any caliber, bullet placement is still the key.

I once knew a doctor's wife in Fairbanks AK who killed a 10 foot polar bear with one shot from her .270 Win. with a 150 grain Nosler Partition bullet. How's that??

I would go with a Savage also for your budget, they are reliable and accurate. The model 110, or the model 111, which I think is basically the newer improved version of the 110. Stick with the .30-06. My local Wally world has the 110's on sale now for $299, and that's for the package gun. The 111's will cost you a little more.<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

Savage gets my vote too. If your only going to have one rifle, I have to say 30-06, even though I'm a huge fan of the 270 for deer.

I'll go along with the Savage. The 30-06 will handle anything in North America.I like my .270 but the 06 has allot more choices in bullets. Ruger Redhawk
