I cant see te WSM's leaving us either. They are catching on like a brush fire. The only thing that gets me about all these new guns is I cant have one of each.

Savage Hunter series.

Winchester Modes 70 super shadow

Howa Lightning and hunting series of rifles.

For a scope I would get a Bushnell 3200 in 3-9x40. You can get them on ebay for $160.00.

With one of these rifles and the Bushnell 3200 you should be able to easily stay under $600.00 for both.

I believe too that I would opt for the 7mm rem or ultra mag. One thing to keep in mind too - Even though us good hunters/shots rarely need any follow-up shots, I think that most of the 7mm WSMs only have 2 to 3 round magazines because of their thickness where the longer 7mms have 3 to 4 rounds mags.

I don't know about the future of the 7MM Reminton short Mag. I do believe that the Winchester version will hang around though. I look for the 7mm caliber to give way more and more to the short 30's. Savage chambers the Short mags which should sell for well under 500.00. The Winchester Shadow is about 450. Remington it chambering the 270 WSM in thier synthetis ADL model. The Short 30 WSM's make a lot more sense to me than the 7mm. Its just a much better all around rifle because of the range of bullets and the 300 WSM is more available right now than the other Shorties. Walmart here has 300 WSMs but not the others yet.

But are there situations that you're likely to encounter where honestly need more than 3 shots without time for a reload?

This is a serious question, BTW.

I know that around here the opportunity to make more than 2 follow up shots is almost nil, and that's if you hunt with a pump or semi-auto shotgun (CF rifles aren't legal here). By the time you get the second shot off the deer is hauling butt, and is usually gone from sight or out of range before number three.

If you want to go that rout I would suggest you find a barrelled action and then buy a stock that is inletted (listed as VIP on Boyds site {$65.00}) and then finish it yourself by finish sanding it and spraying it with some tru oil or Pro custom oil. Both can be had in an aerosol to make it easy.

But if you want to save some time Boyds supplies Howa with their laminated stocks any way so you could just buy a complete rifle. I don't know what they would go for in Iowa but a JRS classic laminated blued rifle goes for $450.00 to $500.00 here in Denver.

Here are the two dealers in Iowa if you want to check with them.

what does it mean when a stock is inletted, and ive heard that its hard to get the finish to not drip ,and dry like that, do you have to get a stock for a specific model or are they interchangeable with some minor sanding, do you need any thing to mount a finished stock to one of the barreled actions.

I may be mistaken but I believe hunting your dear with either a 7mm mag or a 7mm wsm will be considered illegal by the authorities in practically every state and province.
