RE: Anybody hunt with a 45-70?
I mounted a nikon monarch 1.5-4.5x20 on my 1895ss. This is a great combo. The 300gr hp bullets are fine below 2000 fps. Which by the way is plenty for whitetails. I'm gonna take my bigbore on a bear hunt this year and I'm still working on the load I'll take. I may hunt wolves at the same time so a little more range may be in order. I was thinking about the barnes original 300gr fp. I've heard these are a tough bullet. If I hunt only bears I'll use remington 405gr at around 1800 fps.

For 300 grainers out of the box I like the Winchester Partition Gold. Like someone mentioned, my gun shoots the 300's very well also. However, I like to use a little more weight. I like the Remington 405 JSP's, but the velocity is a tad bit lacking for me. Usually, I like Federals and Cor-Bons. Cor-Bon makes a 440 grain load that is absolutely devastating.

BC, I'm guessing it's not because they blow apart, it's because they don't shoot as accurately above 2000fps...I've got a Marlin 1895GS Stainless Guide gun that hates 300grners over about 2100fps, TERRIBLE accuracy (or lack thereof as it were), but it'll throw 1" groups at 100yrds all day, 2.25" at 200yrds easy with 300grn at an average of 2028fps. I usually shoot 405grns or 502grns, but for long range shooting, it's just easier to have a flatter trajectory.

Actually it is because of the weakness of the 300 gr. hp bullets. The deer I have shot with them at over 2000 fps died for sure, but the bullet turned fully inside out and did not exit the deer. I have used sierra and remington bullets but not hornadys.
Has anybody used 300 gr. bullets other than the ones I mentioned? I'd like to hear your results.

Big-Gunz
I had the same trouble with Rem 300 gr JHP. They blew up on impact, did not exit. Not what I wanted to see. Switched to Hornady Interlock 300 gr. over 4198 (I think, cant remember for sure). Velocity around 1900-2000. Have not shot it at anything living yet, so don't know terminal performance. Hoping the interlock feature will control expansion.
