OK I'm Giving Up On Scopes!!!
I have never liked traditional scopes. When I pick them up it takes me too long to focus and re-acquire my target. I find I'm much quicker firing with open sights. Today I proved to myself what I have thought for a long time. I am much more accurate without a scope too!
I tried out my new Tasco red dot scope. That thing is going in the trash can. With a bench and using a spotter I made adjustment after adjustment and the darn thing hit all over the place. I got fed up and started firing free hand with the open sights and consistantly hit the target. I'm glad some of you like them but in my hands scopes suck.
One other observation about that red dot scope. It was a bright day so I increased the brightness to the maximum setting (11 just like Spinal Tap) and still had difficulty making out the dot. Others tried it and had the same problem.

I really don't consider the red dot site the same as a scope. That being said the biggest problems most people have with scopes is that they buy cheap poorly made scopes or have them mounted incorrectly.Poor scopes are not clear and do not necessarily focus very good.If scopes are mounted incorrectly the eye relief will be wrong and the shooter does not get a good sight picture or will be constantly moving his head back and forth to try to see better. If the scope is mounted too high as usually happens with see through rings the shooter can't rest his cheek solidly on the stock and still see through the scope properly. With a little practise a good quality scope properly mounted will provide a faster more accurate sight than any open sight can ever be.

I made the mistake of doing the cheap scope first thing. Never could get the rifle to shoot a good group. Had buddies shoot it incase it was just me, and they could not group decent either. Finaly got smart and bought a Leupold. Now I can hit a gnat's rear at 300 yds. Makes all the difference in the world.

buy a leuopold variX-II and get it properly mounted. you should be able to mount the rifle and see through the scope without having to adjust your head... if done properly a scope should actually be better than open sites for running multiple shots.
