.35 whelen ?
I love my .358 browning, savage and win lever guns. But a local smith has his personal custom .35 whelen up for sale and I'm toying with the idea of buying it, it is built on a rugasr 77 old style and,has a 21 inch bbl and a sweet trigger with a restyled stock. I'm really ackward with bolt guns so I'm not sure how much I will gain. I get 2350 with a .250 speer out of my little BLR81 in .358 and it knocks the heck out of everything including moose, elk and bear. What do you think ?

Sounds like a nice gun. I personally love bolt guns and since you have others, it might be fun to try something different for you.
By the way, I have a T/C Contender in .358 JDJ which gets speeds similar to the .350 Rem Mag. Have you tried other bullets? Is the Speer your using the Grand Slam?

I was thinking you should buy it until you said it was a Ruger. I love there revolvers, but I have had nothing but trouble with their rifles.

The 35 whelen is a great round and I agree with your choice of caliber but I have to agree with frizzellr, don't get it cause it's a Ruger action. There handguns are great but just don't care much for there rifles.

The only thing I would mention is that if the barrel is 21 inches as your post says, then you will not get that much, if any more velocity from the Whelen. That is a pretty short barrel for that cartridge. I think I'm right on this but not absolute.

I think jessejames may be correct about the barrel lengths. If any of your 358's are 22"+ you aren't going to gain much with a 21" Whelen.Comparing the 308 to the 30-06 is the same thing, same "cases".You will however gain a bunch of recoil if that's a good thing.
