What is the best and most versitial 300
I am a little lost on the 300s. I want to buy a 300 but dont know which to buy. I want the most versitial and powerful chamber. I have some land that requires shots of 200 plus. I have made them with my 30-06, but just like everone else, I am looking for the next level. I also want to get a 300 because I will be doing some elk hunting and possible bear next year. Right now my eye is on the rum or win.

As a person who has a 300RUM, and win mag, I would go with the the 300Win Mag maybe and definately the 300WSM. I like my 300RUM, but have worked alot to get it shooting .5" groups. And lots of money. Still velocity spreads are high no matter what powder I shoot. Since I got so much time, brass, and research invested in the RUM, I am going to keep it. But the 300WSM I load for, the spreads are like 20fps. Thats great. And I have a hard time getting any short action to shoot bad. Now the 300Win mag, probably the most versitial out of the bunch. If you don't mind the belt, its the best all around caliber. Shoot, I like them all.

Of the .300's I like the .300 Win Mag.....and while the .300's all look good on paper they will not really be a lot more than the .30-06 in the field.
The .30-06 should have been named the .30 Gov't magnum. It's that good!! At 300 yards the .30-06 will shoot with any of the .300 mags and beyond that the big difference isn't the gun....it's the skill of the shooter judging distance and compensating for drop.
The .300 mags will deliver a bit more energy out there however and if that's the goal I'd get the .300 Win Mag.

RE: What is the best and most versitial 300
For versatility and ammo availability, I would suggest the 300 win. While the wsm are reportedly matching factory ballistics with great accuracy, ammo availability is still modest. While I own both a 300 win and a 300 wby, if I had to choose one, it would be the wby. While expensive, the norma built factory loads are high quality. If you are a handloader, you might consider the RUM because factory loads are significantly slower than what the cartridge is capable of. Hope this helps.

I like the .30 cal magnums I own several and have shot most of the others. The .300 Win is the most versitile, with load avlibility and It has been on the shelf for awhile. Now you mentioned elk hunting and this is where the .300 magnums shine from the short .300 WSM to the WarBird.
I would like to tell you wich one is the best but I can't,I have a .300 WSM and it kills elk well,I have three .300 RUM and this is one sizzlen caliber.I have gotten great accuracy out all the Ultra mags,.5 to 1.0 inch at 100 yards and this is with hand loads, and for me that is good.
I have seen 5 elk killed with the RUM and many deer and antelope and they have been 1 shot kills from 50 yds to 400+.Using 165 gr to 180 gr bullets.
I have seen 2 elk killed with the WSM and 1 was a 1 shot kill to the neck and the other was 2 shot kill one to the heart lungs and one for insurance cause he was still running.
I have seen numorus elk killed with the Win mag and the Weatherby.
So if you wan't a 300 get you can't go wrong with any of them.

I'll go along with the 300 Win. Mag. for many of the reasons stated above. Ammo, dies, case, etc. are easy to find and the the Win. Mag. has a good reputation in the accuracy dept.

Thanks for the input. One other question, how do the short mags compare
to the longer mags. How about availability and ballistics?
Which is the best short?

John Lazzaroni makes the biggest & baddest 300-magnum out there, it's called the Warbird. The Warbird has the highest velocity. The Warbird also has the highest priced ammo on the market.
IMHO I think you can not go wrong with any of the 300 magnums. I prefer the 300-winchester magnum myself, but thats just me. I have owned one for close to 20-years & its a great shooting rifle. I have killed elk, bear, deer & antelope with mine. Sometimes I have felt over-gunned, but I never felt under-gunned.

burnie, all about the same. There is a ton more reloading data for a Win Mag. And believe me, from a guy who bought one of the first 300RUM's and nobody had any data yet, reloading data is important. You will be able to find 300Win about everywhere and 300WSM just about most places. Do what all of us do, go to various ammo makers. Or better yet go to IMR Powder, or Hodgdon, or Alliant Powder and see the velocities yourself.
