RE: would like your opinion on a rebarreling
Hi again whelen36,
Do you recall ever seeing or reading a book which I believe was entitled Big Bore Rifles? (My copy is buried somewhere since our recent move......I'll try to track it down!)
I distinctly remember an article in there concerning the conversion of a 760 to caliber .338/06. (He primarily wanted a quick firing rifle for deer hunting on Kodiak Island.) The gentleman laid out the requirements and considerations involved in the conversion. And even though you are considering a different caliber....the process would remain essentially the same. (The conversion was done shortly after Reminton announced the legitimization of the .35 Whelen....I remember he purposely chose the .338/06 because he wanted something a "little different".) End results.....he was very happy and satisfied with the conversion!
But if you can track down a copy at a library......or I or another member can locate our copy we might could email the entire article. It might simplify the steps....and/or save you a couple of missteps.
Once again.....good luck!
P.S. I see you have a .35 Whelen in a 700 classic. Yup....the other .35 Whelen I had, (other than my 7600), was a 700 classic. How many times in a single lifetime should a guy NEED A FOOT PLANTED IN HIS RECTUM? I have none of them......now![:'(]

RE: would like your opinion on a rebarreling
thanks again bud ,
i've got a book called big bore rifles , if it's the same one your thinking of it came out in the late 80's early 90's and was a softcover book with i think ( and i'm not sure about this one but ) a remington 700 in .416 rem. firing a round of and the photo was of the bullet coming out of the barrel with the muzzle blast ??
the 338/06 is too long for my 760 , it's a .308 class rifle
, i have a custom built mauser 98 that's in 8mm/06 that i was considering rebarreling to 338/06 but , only because i can't seem to get the hang of forming reforming brass. and the 338/06 is a commercially loaded round now thanks to weatherby
yea , i've got a .35 whelen in a 700 classic , and she's a dream . but i can't understand where everybody says the whelen kicks so hard , firing 200 and 250 grain loadings i honestly don't think she kicks at all
i've also got a .350 rem mag in a model 673 that is a dream to shoot , she handled so nicely this past deer season , it's just a shame i didn't see anything to shoot at until the late muzzleloader season ( but that was good too though )
and a marlin 336 in .35 remington which isn't a barn burner but is in my opinion much superior to other so called brush busters of that day

If you wanted to see some fun kick, you should have tried my semi-custom 7600, it originally was a 30-06 and I had it rebarreled to .35 whelen and had the barrel cut down to 16'' inches. This kicked more then I ever could imagine. Right now it is gettin a KDF muzzlebrake installed, but I am going to imagine it is going to have one hellish muzzleblast. I think it will definitly be a great gun for some close action Whitetail hunting in the thick stuff. I have on top of it a fixed 4x Nikon Monarch, I can't wait to get it back and test it out with some stout 250 grain loads.
