Tell your grandpa those guns aren't very accurate and to spend the same dollar on a NEF Handy Rifle in 308 30-06 or 270

A single shot rifle like the HandiRifle can make you a better shot also. You'll work harder for a good shot in a hunting situation.

The longest range I ever took a deer at was 410 yards with a .243. Now I wouldn't recommend taking such a shot, but with any rifle chambered in 7.62x39 you don't even have a prayer of making a decent shot at a deer at that range, let alone half that range.

Denclark,

It sounds like your grandpa is talking about the 7.62x39 round. It was developed by the Russians in the late 1940's, by basically copying a German cartirdge and making minor changes. A lot of people today think of it as a Chinese round, because of the large amount of SKS's, MAK-90, and AK-47 clones imported in the US and their popualrity. Eventhough it has the 7.62mm name, it actually has a bore diameter of .310-.311, not .308 diameter.

The 7.62x39 rounds shoot a 123gr bullet at approximately 2,400-2,500 fps. The round is comparable to the 30/30 Win, in terms of trajectory and energy levels. Your grandpa is correct, in that it is about a 150yd gun.

The major draw back to this round is, that it is most commanly chambered for semi-auto rifles, tha are not the accurate, like the SKS and AK-47. But Ruger makes a very neat little bolt gun chambered in 7.62x39. If this is the new gun your grandpa is think about, it will be a great little gun. One of the great things about this round is the overly plentiful supply of inexpensive mil-surp ammo. You can shot almost all day long for $20 worth of ammo; that's shooting for quality, not quanity, that is. Hunting rounds come in 2 types, soft points and hollow points, both in 123gr.

What are you now about about 13? Have you gotten any size to you yet?

I know several people that I target shoot with that are able to consistantly hit a standard 100 yard target at 400 yards with iron sights easy enough with a 7.62 x 39 so I wouldn't be too concerned about accuracy with one of them, especially if you use a scope. I think that range drops the energy too low to be very effective for clean kills so you do have to be reasonable about the range limitations in that regard.
I used an SKS years ago for deer and cleanly dropped a small buck at 35 yards with a shoulder shot using soft point rounds. If I remember correctly the standard round for that rifle is 130 grains. They are another from the "fun to shoot" and the ammo is cheap category.

The 7.62X39 is a fun round to shoot, especially if it's in a semi-auto like the Mini 30. There's a lot of good inexpensive ammo out there like the Wolf 122 gr. HP. Just recently Wolf started making 154 gr Soft Points that should be good for hunting. A hunter should have no problems killing a deer out to 150 yards with this round.

Stick with the .243. Better bullet.

1shot_1kill, I didn't know Ruger made anything in 7.62X39 besides the Mini-30. I have seen the CZ-USA bolt-actions in it. They are neat little guns and come with a single-set trigger. But heck denclark I'd stick with that .243, it'll shoot a heck of alot flatter than the 7.63X39 for moderatly long shots.
