The one thing that I would not do is to buy a 300ultramag for a one gun person.The only real advantage of the 300ultramag is at ranges approaching 400 yards and only then if the hunter has above average shooting skills and spends a lot of time practising to maintain them.The recoil of the 300 ultramag will discourage some people from practising as much as they should and the reduced barrel life means that if you practise a lot with your 300ultramag you will be rebarrelling the rifle a few times over the course of your shooting career.

You make some excellent points stubble jumper. Having lost the ability to shoot a lot of rounds through the big kickers, I have retired to the whimp calibers with the 280 being about my limit for pain. An ocassional session with the 30-06 is still doable. The 280 is capable of the longest range shooting I would ever do.
