Try this shoot about 10rds through the rifle. Then turn away and have your buddy either load or don't load a round into the rifle. If you click on a empty chamber and flinch then maybe its too much. But I would say if your groups are 1 to 1 1/2 inches at a hundred yards then the rifle is probally in your class of recoil tolerance. I myself have learned recoil doesn't make me move on the bench as much as the nose of the blast. Earmuffs for me atleast while at the range.

I guess I'm going to have to buy this rifle to know how they shoot, Because I don't know anyboby that has one I could shoot. You say it is similar to a slug gun recoil wise? How about rem 1100 semi w/ 3" mag shells? is that close? the only slugs i have shot were in a win 1300 12 ga pump 2 3/4". Some people act like the rum is terrible, then iknow someone w/ a .338 RUM and he says its not that much more than a .300 win mag... I don't know what to do?

ORIGINAL:stink belly Is the recoil too much in the 300 Remington Ultra Magnum? I know it depends upon a lot of factors (load, bullet weight, gun weight, etc), but with a factory load is it managable? Could you shoot 20 rounds at a range and want to do it again at a later date?
Well, it doesn't kick as much as a .375 H&H, so, yes, it certainly is manageable! a lot of how it hits you depends on the shape of the stock. I shot the 700 BDL in this caliber, and found it quite pleasant to shoot. No worse than a .300 Weatherby!

The more you shoot heavy recoiling guns, the more you will be able to tolerate their recoil! If you shoot a .243 most of the time, then pick up a .458, you will notice the difference!

Thanks,I needed to hear that. The one i am looking at is the Rem 700 .300ultra BDL, SS, Synthetic. I believe I will start w/ 180 gr Rem Swift Scirocco bullets, They look as though they retain the most down range velocity and energy of the factory loads.

Good luck with the Scirrocos. Most people either love them or hate them. Out of 3 RUM's, none would shoot those 180gr worth a spit. So I didn't even try to reload any.

Pet Loads. Now keep in mind as always to start low when working up.

93gr H1000 180gr Nosler Partitions, CCI250 Primer, 3.625" COL
94gr Retumbo, 190gr Sierra Matchkings, 215M Primer, 3.650" COL
88gr RL25, 180gr Barnes Triple X, 215M Primer, 3.6" COL
92gr Retumbo, 200gr Sierra Matchkings, 215M Primer, 3.650" COL
89gr RL25, 200gr Nosler Accubond, CCI250 Primer, 3.7" COL

RL25 will give you highest Velocity from 180gr bullets up, but Retumbo seems to have better accuracy.

OOPs almost forgot in my last post I didn't mention the fact that I sent my 300 Rum to Answer Products who guaranteed to reduce the recoil to that of a 270.
YES it works as advertised. My 15 year old shoots deer with it with no problem.
I did shoot all my Rums before having brakes and pads on them and without them don't know if (I) would use(Hunt) these without.

THANKS GUY'S , THE REPLIES HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY HELPFUL. YESTERDAY I SHOT A FRIENDS .338 RUM LOADED W/ 225 GR. AND I HAVE TO SAY, THE RECOIL IS NO PROBLEM AT ALL! PROPPED UP ON THE BACK OF MY TRUCK,NO BENCH OR PADS OR ANYTHING, DON'T GET ME WRONG,IT HAS SOME RECOIL BUT, IT IS NOT NEARLY AS BAD AS MOST PEOPLE SAY IT IS. HONESTLY, IT ONLY HAD SLIGHTLY MORE RECOIL THAN MY WOOD STOCKED REM .3006 [] IN CONCLUSION, I THANK EVERYONE FOR THERE HELP ON THIS , I'M GOING TO GET THE .300 700 RUM SYN SS BDL .
