270 Win. or 270 WSM
Im looking at buying a new Tikka T3 Lite and do not know if I should get the short magnum. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the WSM compared to the regular Win. The gun will be used for deer in Saskatchewan, lots of open areas. Thanks.

Disadvantages of the WSM: Ammo availability, and higher price.
Advantages of the WSM: higher velocity than the standard 270 equals slightly flatter trajectory (only 1" at 300 yards, but it increases from there).
For most folks there isn't much difference since shots will rarely be over 300 yards. Bottom line, if the availability of ammo doesn't bother you and you like short action guns the WSM might be the way to go. However, if you need to be able to buy ammo wherever bullets are sold, and the short action gun doesn't matter to you, get the 270 Win. and you'll have one of the classic calibers.

RE: 270 Win. or 270 WSM
I love this round 270WSM. I am still tinkering around with getting one. All my friends I reload for really like it. Its hard to get to shoot bad. I rarely have trouble finding a load for any short actions.
I mean every gun nut should have a 270Win or 30-06 or really both before hand, but the 270WSM makes a nice addition. I wouldn't buy the 270WSM if I was looking for something to shoot faster than the 270Win, I would buy it because I love short actions.

If I had a good shooting 270 win I wouldn't bother but if it were a new 27 caliber I would probably use it...great ballistics, light recoil and if it is like the other WSM's very easy to reload for.

As has been mentioned here, the short magnum will give you a slight boost in velocity. You mentioned that you'd be hunting where there's lots of open areas. The added velocity will give you a small edge.
Ammo variety isn't that good right now but should get better with the upcoming production of cartridges from Federal. Ammo availability is iffy where I am, other locales report better luck.
Recoil is not bad at all, guns tend to run a little lighter. If you load your own, or ammo price and availability is good where you are, there's really no reason not to go for the WSM.

If I was going to buy a new 270 caliber rifle i would try the 270 WSM. If I already had a good 270 I would not change it for the WSM there just isn't enough gain to make it worth my while. If I could afford to try one just for the hell of it, I probably would.

I have a 270 Win so I am not in the least interested in the 270 WSM. My 270 Win does everything I ask of it and if I wanted more velocity I would go with a 270 Weatherby Mag and forget about the short stuff.
