Personally, I'd opt for the 300 RUM. However, either is a solid caliber. I have a feeling that both will be around for a while, so ammo won't be all that hard to find.

Hunh?
If I were choosing between the two I would buy the Ultra Mag. I actually have one of each in identical Remington 700 BDLSS rifles. I bought the Weatherby before the Ultra Mag was introduced. THe UM has several advantages over the Weatherby besides it's superior ballistics. Brass and loaded ammo for the RUM costs a fraction of what it does for the Weatherby. Headspacing from the shoulder instead of a belt lends itself to superior accuracy, and without a belt your brass should last longer.

If you handload go with the 300 RUM. It will out perform the WBY slightly ballistics wise. But I'm with frizzellr on this the standard 300 WIN handloaded can do just as much as the WBY or RUM with cheaper brass and less powder.

I have yet to see my freind's 300Weatherby outperform my RUM. Weatherby is not far behind by only 100 to 300 FPS. I like both guns, but getting away from the pure emotion of the subject meaning (this is the gun I got so it must be better and this round has been around for years, and its all hype, etc, etc), no belt so significant less problems with headspace, less bulging in front of the belt for reloading, more case capacity, no or little freebore, flatter shooting, more energy, you do the math. Figure out which is for you. Both will do basically the same thing and get you the desired result. I don't believe that moose, or brownbear will know the difference. I love that accumark, and it ain't chambered in a 300RUM, but that pricetag is too much for me. When picking the RUM, I wanted a good gun, under 800 dollars, with effective range of 350 yards with my gun zeroed at 200.
Like on poster said, the 30-378 has superior performance. If you want the ultimate speed, and flattness think about that if you have the money.
Time marches on. The fins were cool on the 55 chevy's, but there time was then.

I have owned both and much prefer the ultramag. It delivers more velocity at similar pressures.I find a difference of 100 to 150 fps in the ultramags favor.I am also getting much better accuracy from the ultramag.
