Weatherby460..."The Weatherby outperforms the Ultra Mag". Are you making this statement from experience shooting both guns? The Weatherby ballistics are actually a tad off from the RUM. With the same 200 grain bullet from Remington, the Weatherby shoots 2900fps w/ 3800 ft/lbs energy. The RUM shoots 3025fps with 4063 ft/lbs energy.
I realize they're close, but at 500 yards the RUM is 9" closer to zero than the Weatherby.

According to the 5th Edition Hornady Reloading Handbook one can push a 190 gr. BTSP @ 3200 f/s in a 300 RUM. According to Norma Loading Data one can push a 200 gr. Vulcan 3150 f/s in a 300 Wby. Mag. If all things being equal, including bullet weight the 300 RUM and the 300 Wby. Mag are very simular according to these two load books. It's all a mattter of personal preference. Good Luck.

Not really Handloader, it a matter of taking both guns to a range with the Chrono and same data. As a handloader, you know that different bullets build different pressures. With my Scirroco's, I start showing major pressure signs with 180g bullets at 95.5g of H1000, but don't show any with Nosler until 97g of H1000. You got to compare apples to apples. Also with the major freebore in weatherby's, pressures at different COL's are hard to compare. Also, with different barrels and throat lengths, this has an effect on velocity.

This is from Remington's website, and talks about the compared energy levels between the .300 RUM and the 300 Wby & Win Mags:
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
The cartridge that launched the Ultra Mag line. And the new standard for big game from deer to elk to caribou. Our field tests back that up. The .300 Remington Ultra Mag delivers a muzzle velocity of 3300 feet-per-second and 2145 foot-pounds of retained energy at 500 yards (while certainly not a typical shot, that’s still more than enough energy for effective performance on elk at that range). Even more impressive is how it fares against the competition: At 200 yards, it delivers up to 18% greater retained energy than the 300 Wby. Mag and up to 27% greater retained energy than the 300 Win. Mag.

IMHO significant performance increases. Comparing a .300 Win Mag to a .300 RUM is like comparing a .30-06 to a .300 Win Mag. Yes one can do most of what the other can do, but with big differences in trajectory and retained energy levels.

I don't think anyone was comparing the 300 Win Mag to the RUM or Weatherby. I simply atated I would stick with mine. I don't have big gun envy and don't need anything more than my 300 Win Mag.

Bigcountry:
I have two friends, one has a 300 RUM, and the other has a 300 Wby. Mag. They are always having shooting contests at the range to see who can out do the other. It has become an on going battle with them. They both shoot under .75", and their velocities do not deviate more than 70 f/s. They have used the same bullets, powder, primers, etc. I have told them give it up it's like beating a dead horse, but they don't listen. I guess that's the fun of handloading. Good Luck.
