I am working on a 257 Roberts now. Building it on a Mauser action. I was planning on giving it to my daughter but she might get my 7mm-08 instead. 257 is perfect for what I need around here. What kind of pet load have you worked up?

The load I used for deer this year was the Barnes 100 grain XFB with 46.0 grains of H414. That load clocked an average 3133 fps. Thats a Max load in my gun. The most accurate load I have worked up was the 115 Nosler Ballistic tip with 43.5 grains of IMR 4831. This one only clocked 2649 average. but shot three shot groups of under half inch. One more grain brought it up to 2791 fps. That was a Max load in my gun as well. My gun is a 700 Remington ADL synthetic. The salesman said it was a small run in 2001. I put a Leupold VX 1 on it. I used Win LR mag primers and Win. +P cases.

I tell you what, I was really impressed by the Nosler CT Ballistic Silvertips out of my 270. I took a 140lb and 125lb doe which is not too bad down here and the performance was excellent. Took a 12 point buck and was really happy with the performance there too. They shoot as well as the Sierra GameKings I was using. I will give the BTs a try when I get the 257 finished. Have you had any experience with the 95 grain BTs in a 243 Win?

I never did try those in the 243 I was so impressed with the 90 or 95 grain Nosler Partition that I never tried anything else after them. I can't recall the weight for sure it was either 90 or 95 grain. Deer never went more than about 10-15 yards after being hit with the Partitions. I bet those BT's would work well too. I don't have a 243 right now but am looking at a 6MM remington. I had one of those before but it was one of the early ones which would not stabalize 100 spire points. They have changed the rate of twist in them now.

If you are shooting full-power ammo, anything from the .416 Rigby is getting to be too much for whitetails! But if you shoot cast bullets, you can use anything up to an 8-bore and not be overgunned. I think anything from a .375 H&H down to the 7mm REM. Mag. would do what you're looking for,a nd you wouldn't be too bored!!
