RE: Which rifle?
Assuming the same weight of bullet when comparing different bore sizes is not a valid assumption. To make a valid comparison for big game hunting you should use the common big game bullet weights that are available for each caliber. The most commonly available big game bullet weights for the .257 caliber are 100 to 120 grains while in .277" caliber it would be 130gr to 150 gr.

RE: Which rifle?
Felt recoil is very subjective. It depends on the weight of the gun,the shape of the stock ,the buttplate or recoil pad and the action type. The heavier the gun is the less it recoils so a heavy 7mmremmag may not recoil any more than a lightweight 308win.A semi auto action also seems to reduce felt recoil over other actions.A good recoil pad will result in much less felt recoil than a hard buttplate. If all factors are equal the 7mm rem mag will offer noticeably more recoil than a 308win. However since most magnum rifles are slightly heavier than the standard chamberings and most magnums come with a recoil pad installed, the difference is not all that great and most people can easily manage the recoil from a 7mmremmag.

IF RECOIL IS ALL YOUR WORRIED ABOUT THEN MAYBE YOU SOULD RETHINK YOUR CALIBUR .THE 308 IN MOST COMMERCIAL RIFLES HAS VERY LITTLE RECOIL , I DONT KNOW HOW BIG A BOY YOU ARE BUT HUNTING LARGE GAME DOES REQUIRE A RIFLE WITH SOME RECOIL.

RE: Which rifle?
I own a brwning a-bolt 2- in 7mm rem mag with boss- the recoil is almost nil-but the down side is that the increased volume will make yer ears feel like they want to bleed--OUCH--its on the pricy side but i lov mine. A good friend of mine had rem 7mm mag and hated to shoot it more then a couple of times, he said it kicked like a mule- I also own rem 308-which the recoil is felt more from it then from 7mm. The boss made the price jump 200$---but in my opinion it was well worth it. Happy hunting-->for deer & rifle ..

The 7mag would be an excellent choice and so would the .300 win mag.
I myself would take the .300. But you couldnt go wrong with either. Study ballistics and decide for yourself. But definatly pick one of the 2.
