I have heard of others getting their rifles re-barreled to a Weatherby caliber. I am curious about this since I used to own a 7mm Weatherby Magnum. Mine was a Mark V. I have owned many magnum rifles through the years, but that Weatherby was the poorest shooting rifle I ever owned....and recoil is not an issue with me. I tried reloading all kinds of combinations for that rifle and only found one that had any hunting possibilities. With that load, I could get a three inch group. With everything else I could consistently hit a bushel basket at 100 yards. A close friend of mine had a 270 Mark V Weatherby magnum at the same time. He had a similar experience. I think my friend and I were experiencing the same 2 problems. One problem was our stocks and bedding. The other problem was the infamous Weatherby " freebore" .

To get to my point, I just wanted to ask....when you re-barrel to a Weatherby Cartridge, do you have to have freebore ahead of your chamber to achieve that Weatherby velocity? My understanding of freebore is that there is some free travel before the bullet contacts the rifling. That is how Weatherby achieves higher velocities within allowable pressure extremes. You would find a similar scenario in a well worn rifle barrel that has throat erosion. Anyone who has reloaded much has noticed that you can increase the powder load of a well worn rifle somewhat before you notice signs of excess pressure.

So again, will your new barrel have freebore? Just curious. I sold my Weatherby years ago.

zrexpilot, I think you need to go back and check the ballistics chart. You have it backwards......and when did the 243 start being available in 115gr? I' m not doubting the 243 just saying i don' t think it is a better deer caliber than the 25-06.

I have seen handloads for the .243 in 115 gr but not in factory ammo.
Heres the ballistic comarison off the remington web site.
The .243 is in the new Remington load in 90 gr. and the 25-06 is in both 100 and 120 grains.

First off notice the .243 is better in coefficiency. It bucks the wind better than even the 120 gr -06
Second Velocity is a tad down at the muzzle but by 100 yds there already the same and by 200 yds it exceeding the -06
Energy is a tad down but the same by 300 yds, but the 120gr-06 is still a bit better but falls faster too.
Third trajectory- the .243 is shooting flatter from the get go.
Dont get me wrong the -06 is an excellent gun the reason I prefer the .243 is it does what the -06 will do, but also do what it cant and that is shoot 55gr, 60gr.and 75gr. ammo for varmints. These bullets tremedously excceed the -06 in long range trajectory.

zrexpilot-Try using the federal 100gr barnes x load for the 25-06 and at 500 yards the velocity is listed at 2140fps.With a 200 yard zero this load will only be 34.8" low at 500 yards.Or you can use the federal 115gr nosler load which has a 500 yard velocity of 2070fps and with the same 200 yard zero it is 35.8" low at 500 yards. Both of these loads shoot flatter and carry more energy than the 243win load that you use as an example.

.25 is awfully close to 7mm, may as well spread them out a bit. Since you are talking varmits and the like, how about a 223, 22-250, 243 or so rifle. That way the varmit rifle can do what it does best and the 7mmRemMag can do what it does best. No sense in accumulating a rack of rifles with no spread and everything roughly equivalent.

I think ballistics tables can sometimes give us a skewed picture of cartridges. The remington chart is comparing a .243 swift scirrocco(one of the most streamlined hunting bullets available) to remingtons flat base spitzers. If similar bullets are compared, the .25-06 will show a decided advantage. The .25-06 also shoots 75gr. varmint bullets quite well.

Biggunz hit the nail right on the head. I' m not trying to make anyone mad just thought the 100gr was as big as you could load for a 243. Where did you find 115gr bullets for the 243?
