mounting my scope
I am going to be mounting a scope to my mossberg 500 12ga, the slug barrel i am putting on dosent have a spot for a scope right on it. if you look at the gun and about 1 1/2 inches ahead of the saftey there are two small screws and about 2 1/2 inches farther up there are two more are those screws there for scope mounts?

RE: mounting my scope
i dont think they are. i would get mossbergs phone number and ask them. they may have released a special model with pre-drilled holes but the model 500 20 guage that i have i had to get a side scope mount which i dont like because when i want to use the gun for small game i have to remove it. im thinking of getting the slug barrel for it from them that is rifled and has a scope cantelever mount already on it so all i have to do is switch barrels out from season to season.

RE: mounting my scope
Actually I just found out they are what I thought. Mine is a mossberg 500a 12ga
weaver makes a mount base that gose right into those holes, they said just use a little of the red locktight when installing.

RE: mounting my scope
Teggerdine,
In the past I owned a New Haven 600, (actually made by Mossberg...a model 500...much like Marlin and Glenfields). I don' t remember if it was Weaver or another company but I found a scope mounting system. It was actually a plate that mounted on the left hand side of the receiver. If I remember right I believe it mounted where there were two screw holes plus it replaced an " assembly pin" . It has been about 20 years so my memory is a little fuzzy...but it worked reasonably well. I mounted a fixed 2 1/2X scope and was shooting a smoothbore at that time, (slug hunting deer on Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD).
I guess its biggest fault was the fact the it attached the scope to the receiver as oppossed to the barrel, (most shotgun barrels and not attached to the receiver like a rifle). Even though it was not " rifle like" accurate....it was more than adequate for my purpose. I cleanly killed several bucks and doe with that combination. So in the final analysis....it worked!
Good luck!
P.S. As already suggested....the best solution today would be another barrel with a cantelever scope mount!
