i read this thread the other day, and then today while me and my two buddies were sighting in our rifles on of my friends dad said something about he looked in a gun book he had and he said that the .308 dropped 14 inches at 300 yrds, me and the other kid kinda looked at eachother and then talked about it later and we were kinda dumbfounded by what he said. i knowt hat it doesnt drop that much. but ya just kinda agrivated by what he said.

young-gun, actually that guy was correct. Assuming a 100 yard zero and 165 or so bullet, that drop is about right. Remington shows their 180 grain factory load as dropping about 20" at 300 yards. But that' s another reason I zero my hunting .308 about 1 1/2" high at 100 yards.

diyj98 is right. It depends on where the rifle is zeroed. I zeroe my hunting rifles to hit 1" high at 200 yards. That puts me 2 to 3" high at 100" , and depending on the load, 4-6" low at 300 yards.

A good rule of thumb for moderate velocity cartridges such as the .308 and 30-06 is:
From a 100 yard zero- up 2 minutes for 200 yards
From a 200 yard zero- up 3 minutes for 300 yards
So from a 100 yard zero, the bullet is dropping approximately 5 minutes (15" ) at 300 yards.
