RE: 338-06........what a shame.
I' m now quoting from the fifth edition of the Hornady loading manual: .338-06 barrel length 23 1/2, Mauser 1898, 1:9 twist, 250 grain bullets, 59.0 grains Win 760, Muzzle velocity 2,600' /sec
.338 Win Mag: Mod 70-Winchester, 24" barrel,1:10 twist, 73.7 Grains Rl19 with 250 grain bullet, muzzle velocity 2,700' /sec
In my eyes the 100 feet/sec is insignificant. If I can build a one pound lighter rifle on a .338-06 verses a .338 Win Mag, thats significant.
If you choose to live in a world where muzzle velocity is the only criteria, so be it....it' s not the world I live in!!!

RE: 338-06........what a shame.
In reading all of these replies about why one would need a 338-06 if the 338 mag can shoot the same weight bullets at 100 to 200 fps faster.
We can go with the same logic with the .308 and the 30-06, the 30-06 and 300 WM and 300 WSM. Then the 300 WM and the 300 Wea mag. So on and so on.
Then there is the 338 WM and the 340 Wea mag.
The 280 Rem and the 7mm rem mag.
We could go on and on with cartridges that are popular and only have a 100 fps or less gain on other equally popular cartridges.
Heck why do we need any of the other cartridges available now that Lazzeroni has all of his barrel burners out on the market?
Personally I would love to see the three major manufacturers load the 338-06. I just might have to have one my self. I would really love to have a 338 WSM. Would be somewhere between th 06 and the mag in a short action. Sweet!
