looking for advice
i am looking for a scope for my F.N. mauser chambered in 35whelen. i have ppe sights instaled on it but cannot seem to get it to hit paper at 50yds and 75yds and 100yds.
so after looking at my fathers 308win avage " scout " rifle. his VX-II when bring up to my shoulder is right there like stubblejumper has talked about being quick as a peep sight.
this gun will be used in the swamps and in other hunting done on the ground, where shots can get from 25yds out to 150yds. do you think i should go with a low powered scope like a 1.5-5 or maybe a fixed 4X ?

I personally would go with the 1.5-5 or 1.5-6 variable. If you are going to have shots as close at 25 yards, the 4x is going to be a little much.

Quilly,
Are you useing a correct sight picture? Is the peep sight installed correctly and securely? I' m not trying to insult you with these questions but you should be able to hit paper at the ranges you are shooting. It sounds like a basic but serious flaw with either the sights or target acquisition.
If you really want to scope it then a 2x7 would probably be just about perfect.

Quilly, I have a Burris 2.75x fixed power scout scope. Have it set in Leupold QWR rings. This scope was on a 8x57 masuser, but I shot the throat out of the gun. You can aquire the target faster with this style scope. I found the 2.75x to be acceptable to 150 yards or so. LOL NBH.

I like the 2x7 best for this kind of hunting. I have an old Redfield 2x7 tracker thats been on all my big rifles. 338, 45-70 and 416 rem Mag. I can' t hurt that old scope its 32 years old now. If it ever goes to hell I don' t know what I would do. I may look at the new 2x7 Leuplod rifleman. Got to have one in case the old Redfield gives out before I do. It now has an easy life on my old 6.5x55 swedish mauser. A ***** cat.

james B..
i think the older redfields before they went under and where bought out where just as good as the leupolds back then.
i just need to find out why i am getting no groups with the peep sight. both where mounted by 1shot_1kill.

Quilly,
You should be able to remove the bolt and boresight the rifle with your naked eye well enough to easily hit the paper at 100 yards, much less 50. Somethings wrong. either the sights aren' t installed correctly, perhaps when the rifle was drilled it wasn' t done correctly, or your shooting form is off badly (sorry). Have you tried the rifle at 25 yards?
