RE: The new 308.
Hey you guys shooting those 308' s. I am thinking about getting one probably in a T/C encore but am a little concerned about trajectory on the 308. I know it can punch paper or silouettes out to 1000 meters but how about on a 300 or 400 yard deer when its zeroed for 150 yards. How much bullet drop will I have to allow for. I understand that the 308 is a nail driver but it seems you have to know your distances for it to shoot at longer unknowns. Wouldn' t the 300 win mag be just as good and accurate and not drop quite as much. Also would the 7 mag be as accurate. Of course accuracy is inherent in the bullet choice as well as the rifle used.

bowace, if you want to learn about long range hunting check this out.
http://www.longrangehunting.com/
And yes 300-400yds is fine for deer with the .308.

I checked that site out. Pretty interesting. Long range to me is a little different that for some. Being a silhouette shooter for many years I have seen bullets do strange things on the way to that 500 meter Ram. Winds you cannot even detect from your shooting point can have effects on distant shots. The wind 500 meters away can be comming from slightly different angles. Silhouettes don' t move but a game animal can turn around or take a step or even laydown in that time it takes to squeeze off a shot and the time in flight. I can see no reason to shoot at extreme ranges. Its not life or death and no law says you must take a risky shot. At ranges of 500 yards or more, many things can happen and most of them are bad. I have taken very few shots at game at past 300 yards. I would not try 400 unless every factor present was in my favor. Knowing the exact range on a day with no or almost no wind on land that I know well might convince me to try a 400 yard shot. In most cases I really would rather not shoot past 250 yards. That said, the land where I hunt offers few shots less than 200 yards and even at that range I want every advantage I can muster. All thing considered I consider the 308 to be the best medium long range caliber around. Easy to load very modest recoil and built in accuracy. There was a time when I would have only considered a magnum rifle for long range but many standard calibers can do the job as our forfathers proved with the old 45-70 and other sharps rifles.

Here' s KB moments before the impact of a 757 into WTC (ABSOLUTELY no disrespect towards WTC victims intended, this picture is a fake)
I can, it' s a challenge! Now, caution is hte word when HUNTING at extreme ranges.
I would have NO hesitation about taking a deer out to 600, but beyond that I would not risk it, and that' s primarily because I KNOW my bullet and I know my rifle, it drops 12 minutes (36 clicks) from teh 100 yard line to the 600 yard line.....
It' s just a matter of practice, in reality there are few places in wooded area' s that you will ever shoot bey ond 200, some of our clear-cuts will go out 300 or 400 yards, and a good hunter would stalk the prey.......but a long shot would be challenging as well.

A challenge is fine for targets and silhouettes. Not for big game. Knowing how much your bullet drops is one small part of making a quick kill at ranges past 400 yards. I have seen to many complete misses at long range not to mention poor non leathle hits. That however is a matter of conscience It would have to be life or death which does not make it for me while hunting. Most rifles are not up to the task let alone most shooters.

The way I see it is most of your seasonal hunter types cant shoot half arse straight anyway. They pull the rifle out to sight in 1 month before season and only shooting off a box of shells or so, which is fine for short distance. Then if they were to see a trophy at a longer distance than there norm they are going to make a lousy shot. It is not anymore dangerous shooting at a deer at 100yds than it is at 600yds, if you miss the deer at 100yds where do you think the bullet is going to stop at? I havent met anyone that will wait on the deer to stop in front of a backstop,so in case he misses it will be safely stopped. Now if you are nervous shooting at a deer at 600yds knowing you are aiming at the kill zone but you dont know your ballistics etc.. and afraid the bullet might hit him in hte butt, you better not shoot.
I have a friend that is a major deer hunter, he likes the fancy ballistic calibers, he goes around bragging about his rifle " Rem 700 7mmRUM" hitting a quarter at 50yds. This is nothing to bragg about. He is a moran.
Do some long distance shooting for practice 300yds for a start after you get the groups to the size of a golfball you should be good to go. Or better!
