I' ve had good luck with the Nosler 150 grain ballistic tip. Don' t be afraid to try a range of bullet weights. Although I' d have never predicted it, I' ve got a Tikka 308 that shoots amazing well with 110 grain Sierra HP bullets.

The rifle is the Savage tactical with thier new accu-trigger. It has a 24 inch heavy barrel and the double pillar bedded stock in synthetic. It weighs just under 9 lbs. It will be for long range mule deer. I think some sort of 165 grain bullet may be a good mix of velocity and retained energy. I used only the 190 grain Hornady HPBT match for silhouettes. Then swithched to the straight 190gr btsp for deer. It did a good job but I don' t think I need quite that heavy a bullet. That was with my old 308 which I finally wore out. It had about 6000 rounds through it. I had a Bushnell 10X silhouette scope. I shot that combo for about 10 years.

the 150 gr SST is a good round for hunting. It has all of the charcteristics of the AMAX with a bit thicker outer case. I use them in my 30-06 loaded to 2960 fps aprox.
They make quite a mess of the lungs and heart at 150yds with this load deer don' t walk far(usually 10 yards)and fall over. With the 308 I would think they would be even more accurate as it is generally a more accurate weapon.

Kentucky boy, hey what MOS are you?

Reason I ask is there is no such thing as an M118 sniper rifle, M118 designates the old match grade ammunition for the M24 SWS (Sniper Weapon System)....

Sorry, had to jump in, I had seen one of those pics on the Marine sniper page before....

For a good load I use 45.0 gr of Varget with a 165 gr GAMEking.

For match bullets I use 45.5 gr Varget with a 175 gr MATCHKing, out of a 1/12 twist barrel. It does the job at 1k in a match.......

As for *anyone* shooting the .308 past 1k, ha, good luck, that' s what the 300 WM and 6.5x284 were made for.......or a .338 if you really want some kick.

This is my rig, I shoot it at 1000 yards in matches when I' m not shooting my Palma rifle....

Kentuky Boy,
You are most obviously a fake and wannabe who does not even know enough about being a Sniper in the US Army to make it sound convincing.
No ARmy sniper shoots a model 7 remington, nore is there an M-118 rifle.

I know quite a few REAL DEAL Snipers who usually get quite upset about some little wannabe fake posting that they are the real thing. They had to work thiier a$$es off to get that title.

I think I will have you researched by some LEO types I know, then your name will go up on the sniper wall of shame on the net. This place is reserved for little wannabe fakes like yourself.

It is sad when someone has so litle self worth that they must pose to be something they are not!

A 308 is only good to 1000 yards max, then it is pushing it with the wind and real deal conditions.

The ARmy shoots am M-24 SWS wich is a long action model 700 chambered for 7.62X51. The issue ammo is now the M-118 LR. which is a match grade load with a 175GR SMK bullet. In fact, the picture posted is of an M-24 SWS, sans the Redfield open sights block.

Hey Celt! Fancy meeting you here!

Someone over at the sn ipers hide recognized one of the pics from an old recruiting poster....I was wrong about the marine picture but I' ve seen that other picture somewhere else........

Yeah, unless you are David Tubb shooting a 216 gr SMK, good luck getting to 1200, a fluke shot could......in .308 that is.....
