Aw, go ahead and get yourself one of those new 300 short actions. Try it out and let me know how you like it. I' ve been Wanting to get one of those myself. I have hunted with the 06 and 7mm. I didn' t notice alot of differance between the two.

If you just want a new rifle i' d opt for the 25.06 which also has some good range without all the kick but you aready have two fine deer rifles in the 30.06 & 243. You can really stretch that 06 out if you go to a lighter bullet and it will take a deer down just as far as you are capable of shooting. The 243 kills it' s share of deer every year too and if equipped with the right bullet will do a fine job on deer as well at long ranges.

I' m in agreement with those that suggest you try some " flatter shooting" loads in your .30-06....(and don' t be afraid to use the .243 with a good medium game load). Either will do very well for most circumstances when hunting whitetails. I' d give them a try before I went looking for another rifle for the stated purpose.
Good luck!
P.S. If you just would like another rifle....that is a good enough reason to get another.

I agree with Red. Go with either the 150 or 165 grain bullets in your .06. That is unless you just want a new firearm. If I wanted something that didn' t kick much more than the .06, but had good ballistics in a lighter package, I' d think about the .270 wsm in a Tikka rifle. I also think Ruger makes a short, light rifle in that chambering. Almost a carbine.

A couple of years ago I went down to Wal-Mart and bought a .300 Wby Mag for $388. Now I' m ready for anything. I reload, though, which saves me lots of $$$ on ammo. Good ammo for this caliber can be $50-60 a box. The cheap stuff would probably run you $25 or more. You' re worth it. Go ahead and treat yourself.

lol 21 thats what I thought, you just got that most contagious of hunting bugs... the " Wannanuther Gunicus" . Its a deadly bug that leaves mens bankaccounts depleted, their wives mad and gunsafes swelling!!!
Like I said, your old 06 is MORE than capable. But if you just want something " different" and dont wanna spend a totesack full of money on it, try a Savage in Lazzeroni Patriot. Power and ballistics wise its essentially identical to a hot 300 Wby mag (it actually pushes bullets over 180 grain faster than the 300 Wby does), but its in a lightweight and quick handling package. The ammo is expensive but the gun itself is a couple hundred dollars cheaper than most comparable guns that are also magnum calibers with stainless barrels and composite stocks.
