I had been putting off getting an AR for several years and was planning to buy this spring. I wound up buying a Bushmaster on December 28th. I was able to buy the rifle at $100 below MSRP, which was too much, but it could have been worse. If you procrastinate too long, like me, it may be very hard to find one.

Last weeks local paper I saw a guy advertising two AR's, he had a 223 S&W MP15 for $2200 and a DPMS 308 for $3200 or $5000 for both(used!), ouch!!!! A month ago I could have bought a brand new 223 S&W for less than $900 and the DPMS 308 for less than $1300. A week before that a guy had a Bushmaster for $2800. I guess the prices for used AR's has gone thru the roof, arround here anyway. Last weekend I went to Lewiston, no AR in any gunstore except for the Black Sheep and the two they had were S&W MP15 22L.R.'s.

Yep, you best buy one, if you can find one!

I'm acquiring parts for a couple ARs myself. I started about a week ago. Luckily, I found 2 stripped lowers locally by a guy who used to be a teacher of mine. A few days of casual browsing and I've found lower kits, 10 & 20rd mags, and blank A3 uppers. I'm leaning towards 9 twist barrels, 16-18" and will probably run 55-60gr bullets. Despite the DIY factor, I estimate they'll wind up in the $900-1000 range (each) without sights/optics or a good trigger. Worth it? You decide!

Flat top upper, or EOP.
Forward assist and dust cover.
18-20" barrel. Heavy or heavy fluted, .750" gas block 1:8" or 1:9".
Good trigger. I like a 2 stage, Giessel triggers are orgasmic, RRA's are fantastic, Bushmasters 2 stage match are great.
20-30rnd mags.
Or up the ante to a 6.8SPCII 1:11" 18". Recoil will be more so keeping the scope down on runners is a little more difficult, but they anchor dogs very nicely.
MagPul PRS isn't worth the money, but it does look great. Telescoping M4 stocks suck, period. Anyone who says they really like to use them in a hunting rifle is lying. I "don't mind" mine on my 16" rig, but would prefer something else, just haven't decided what yet.
