Dragunov SVD (Russian)

It shoots a weaker version of the .308 Win. My question is, why one would want to use one for hunting when there are so many top quality rifles you can get for much less than the Dargunov would cost and also in a better caliber?

It's long. It's cumbersome. You can achieve far better accuracy for less money. If I were in the market for something new for hunting, it certainly wouldn't be this. Yup, it's different. So would be having a third eyeball in the middle of your forehead.

Hope you are coming into ALOT of money as a true Dragunov SVD will set you back $10,000+. The ones you see out there for $1,000 or so are knock offs and are nowhere near the real thing other than looks. While it will work as a hunting rifle there are far better guns out there for hunting. If you are just looking for a conversation starter at the range or for general shooting then by all means get one. You could buy a VEPER in 308 and be money ahead and have a more accurate rifle than the knock offs.

They used to make a version called a Tiger Carbine many years ago. When they first came out, you could find them at gun shows for under $700 because everyone wanted a real SVD. Sporterized versions normally sold for much less.
Now, ive seen the same model selling for over $2000 on auction sites. That kind of cash would nearly pay for a very nice M1A/M21/XM21 build.
