Default Help beginner buying rifle

Hello all, i have recently got my liscence to buy my own firearms.
i am looking for some advice hopefully you can help!
I am looking to buy a centre fire rifle for big game ( deer elk bear etc.) and im looking for a rimfire rifle for small game (coyote, wolverine rabbit etc.)
What rifles ( brands as well ) would you guys reccomend?
( prefer lower price but still good quality)

Much appreciated thx.

Marlin XL7 or XS7, savage 110, Ruger American. Save yourself some trouble and don't get a Remington 770.

suggested big game calibers- .270, .308, 30-06

I do not know much about rimfire rifles. i only have one. If semi autos are legal in your area for hunting go with a ruger 10/22. They have many after market accessories.

I think there are some things that need to be asked first. Are you planning to put a scope on your rifle(s)? How much do you want to spend? How much experience shooting do you have?

There are a lot of choices out there and it really boils down to how much you want or can afford and what feels good to you. My go to hunting rifle is a FN made Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather in 270 Winchester. My most accurate hunting rifle is a TC Icon in 308 Winchester. The Remington 700, Savage 10/110 series, Ruger M77, or Browning X-Bolt/A-Bolt would serve you well for a lifetime.

Starting out it would be hard to beat a 308 Winchester, 30-06 Springfield, or the 270 Winchester.

You might check out the Mossberg 100 ATR and the 4X4 in 270, 30-06, and 25-06 (4X4 only) while you are at it.

As far as rimfires, the newest one I have was made in 1974, and it's a Ruger 10/22. It was used, abused, and never cleaned by my stepfather and I inherited it three years ago when he died. Cleaned it up, refinished the stock, and my son is shooting the bejeezers out of it now.

ricky04,

for $1000.00 you should do well in acquiring BOTH of the rifles you want, with optics, unless you demand brand new.

Are you tied to having a NEW rifle? You might be able to snag a pretty good centerfire rifle WITH good optics already attached for a decent price. This might give you enough $ left over to buy a nice rimfire with optics already mounted also. In fact, with some good shopping and a little knowledge, you could snag the 2 rifles, WITH optics, and have enough for a pretty good batch of ammo for both.

Check out the local on-line auctions. They will have a 10%-13% buyer's fee tacked on at the end, and they will charge you tax, but I've seen some amazing deals in the past few months. The prices will probably go up as hunting seasons gets into full swing.

I actually saw a used, clean, newer model Savage in 7mm Rem Mag go for $205.00 2 weeks ago. That's nuts. Out the door that would have been 239.00 for the 6% mich tax and 10% buyers fee. It did not have a scope on it but that leaves a bunch of change left for optics, with your budget.

Whether you are tied to a NEW rifle or you are ok with used, the advice above on calibers and manufacturers is right on.

ricky04,

Since I'm from south of the border I'm not familiar with Canadian gun laws regarding buying guns ... online or otherwise.

I'd stop by a gunsmith's / gunshop's office/shop and ask what's available. Start there.

Here's a site for getting information

http://www.canadaguns.ca/

I'll keep looking and let you know what I can find.
