.270 Win. is an all around round. The Remington is very well balanced gun. I don't buy Remingtons anymore but got nutthin against them neither. Hold it and see how ya like it. It's a nice slim stock, not bulky like some guns. All there is to it.

My first deer/big game rifle was a Remington 700 BDL-LH .270 that I got about 1976. A very few years after getting it, I had it glass-bedded and the trigger lightened to just over 2 lb. I have never regretted that purchase and even though I have obtained many other rifles since, it is my favorite. I handload my ammo, and it handles practically every load I feed it equally well. All I have to do is adjust my scope up or down for different loads to get the trajectory where I want it. For a shot at any reasonable distance, I don't have to worry about more than a few inches of drop below point of aim.

270 Remington
That would be a great caliber for both deer and elk. I prefer Winchester for a brand. A friend of mine has a new Remington in 7mm Win mag and did great last year with it. If you want to go big caliber The 7mm win mag will take any animal in the US and Canada . I think that anything above that is being over gunned .You have to look at whether you can handle the recoil on the bigger guns. I have had 270's before and they are just great I now have a 7mm win mag.

Or how about a .308? I actually have a lot of previous hunting experience with a .308. Is it a better choice because a .243, .270 and a .308 are all the same price where I'm looking. They're all Remingtons with 3-9x40 scopes.
Unless you've just GOT to have a shorter action.. I'd opt for .270, all other things being equal

Well lets see
There have been more than 15 calibers used successfully on whitetail deer. How much money do you have?
.270 Winchesters have been used in hunting since 1925.
Jack O'Connor, the outdoor writer, hunted with the .270 Winchester for 40 years. He probably died before you were born.
It's a good choice of quite a number of good choices.

Jack O'Connor did love the 270, and it is a great caliber. All of the calibers mentioned will kill deer. Anything bigger or hotter than the 3006 is probably overkill. Or at least over recoil. If you want one gun that will serve on most anything in the lower 48, go with a 3006. It does most anything well and the kick is not too bad. Check out the Ruger rifles, Remington 700's were once good guns but they had problems a few years back. Go to gunshops and look at their used rifles, some fine old guns can be had for reasonable prices. Be sure to clean and dry the bore for a good lookin' before buying.
I once killed a deer with a 9X57 Mauser, is that #16?
