Default Looking for new 30 cal

I am looking for a new 30 cal rifle that will shoot well at 400 yards. I am thinking 300 wsm or 300 win. Also was looking at the remington 700 or a savage. What are you thoughts?

Almost any rifle from any of the top 10 manufacturers will shoot well quite a ways past 400 yards if the shooter can do their part! It just depends on what you like, the feel and how much you want to pay.

400 yards is not that far I'd go for a 30-06 or 308win. Plenty of power for anything most normal people hunt. Why spend the extra money on ammo for a 400 yard gun.

The 300 WSM or 300 Win. Mag. sure as heck packs plenty of punch at 400 yards. My choice of the two in the 300 Win. Mag. I have had both. The 300 WSM rifle that I had was a Winchester Model 70 in SS with their Mauser style extractor. Try as I might, I never found a factory load and never could develop a hand load that grouped great. I have a Rem. 700 in 300 Win. Mag. that is a fine shooting rifle using a couple fo factory loads that I have tried, as well as a couple of my hand loads. It would probably be easier to find a wider variety of factory ammo for the 300 Win. Mag.

I am of the opinion that about any modern factory rifle should do OK. The two that you have mentioned would be among these. I will say that unless you are after some really heavy critters, a good hunting grade bullet out of a 30.06 Spr. or 308 Win. is plenty lethal at 400 yards.

A Savage 111 LRH in 6.5x284 would be a awesome set-up for that distance plus some. I wouldn't mind having one myself.

Thanks guys I ended up with the 300 wsm in the Remington 700. I picked the short cause was told less recoil and the guy said if I didn't like it he would take it back and give me the win mag. I wanted the larger caliber for if I ever do draw that elk tag. I have a 270 win 70 ranger that I do use for deer to. The savage looked great to but talking with people it seems that I can build up the Remington a little easier. Thanks for the input once it comes in and I pick up a scope I'll post how it shoots.

Good choice, the wsm is a great round. If you use the right ammo or reload it, it can do what a win mag can if not better.

And for future reference, you can buy almost as many accessories for a savage you can a Remington, most of those parts don't require a gunsmith to change them though.

Enjoy your new bang stick!
