Question about .308
Was wondering what your opinion is about the .308 for deer and elk. I know it is pretty popular for deer but not sure about elk. Would even consider using it on coyotes too. Anyone know what grainages this is available in? Thanks

RE: Question about .308
If your looking at factory loads you' ve got mainly 150s,165s, and 180s. If you reload your selection is quite a bit larger. I haven' t had a chance to hunt elk yet, but when I do I will probably use a heavier round. I know people do use .308s for elk though. With the light recoil they are probably good for ladies or kids. As far as deer sized game are concerned, it' s pretty tough to beat a .308. I imagine it would to a number on a coyote as well.

RE: Question about .308
You won' t see too many elk stories recommending the .308. All the while you will see the .270 mentioned as an elk caliber. Why, I don' t know! The .308 will do anything the .270 will do! For extra range and more umph, you might look at a 7MM or .300 mag though!

RE: Question about .308
The 308 will work fine for elk. Use a good 180 grain bullets and limit your shots to about 250 yards. Jim Zumbo who has killed more elk than most people will ever see has an artical in this months out door life about elk rifles. He says the 270 with 150 gr. bullets is his minumum. He then lists the 30-06 7 mag 300 win mag 300SAUM and lists the 338 as the Max in his opinion. The 308 is in that class. His new favorite is the Model 7 in 300 SAUM.
