Little more than a 22 rimfire. My wife shoots one.

I'm surprised at the responses to this thread, my .308 s/s kicks worse than my 30-30, probably about the same as 3" 12ga.

Same as the 30-06 roughly.

A bit less than the 30'06. If you shoot the same bullet weight. As for the effect of the firearm on percived recoil a Rem. Model 7 will of course have more felt recoil than their Varmint Special or 40X Target with a bull-barrel when you shoot the same ammo in all three.

An M-14/M1A type rifle in .308 was a bit milder than an M1 Garand, but neither is cause for concern.

In rifles of equal weight, the .308 will recoil 10-15% less due to it's smaller powder charge and 75-100 fps less velocity.

Greets,
Having fired a .308 lever gun, it had a moderately light recoil. My 30-06 is very mild, BUT my -06 is a very heavy rifle, it absorbs the recoil. I Have also fired a .270 bolt rifle in a sythetic stock, it kicked as hard or harder than my brothers .308 lever rifle.

Just my uneducated opinion!

biged said it . my little model 7 in 308 thumps you pretty good . i would rather shoot my sendero in 300 win mag a bunch. you can't beat the seven for in the woods deer hunting and the 308 has never let me down. a 308 in a police pss is so mild. wieght plays a big role on recoil.

As Wimp said, there are a lot of other factors involved in recoil. Bullet weight, rifle weight, action type and stock style, to name a few!
For the most part, the .308 should be close to the 30-06. Would you beleive I have a 7MM Rem. mag. that actually kicks less than my .308? Styles and weights are the factors!
