.243 Ammo, Whats the best?
Hey guys, I was just wanting to ask what yall think is the
best .243 ammo to use for hunting? Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertip?
By the way, what is a ballistic tip supposed to do upon impact with the
target, animal, etc.? Any help on .243 ammo would be greatly appreciated!![:-]

The ballistic tip is designed to expand rapidly when it contacts resistance. In .243 it may not penetrate deep enough on deer. Loads from Federal like the Sierra Gameking, Nosler Partition, or Speer Grand Slam would be better for deer. Other manufaturers would work too, just picked Federal out of the bunch. Go to www.federalcartridge.com for info on the loads.

Just depends on what you are going to be hunting, I like a 75 grain holler-head for shooting groundhogs and coyotes, and a heavier 100 grain solid point for bigger game.

I assume that you' re not hunting anything bigger than deer with the .243.
It' s a fine deer gun....and a fine varmint gun.....Deer don' t need premium bullets because they are actually big varmints.....they are really not truly big game like moose and elk and other animals. Any manufacturer that loads a 100 grain bullet makes a fine deer cartridge in .243.
It' s a easy one....100 grain for deer, and 55-80 for varmints.
If you put the bullet in the right place you got venison in the freezer.

For deer I would not use less than a 100 gr. bullet. A Game King, Core-Loct or Nosler Partitioner would be good. I would not use the Ballistic Tip in this small of a caliber!

Personally I don' t care for the 100 grain Core Lokt. In my experience it blows apart very easily. I can highly recommend the 100 grain Sierra GameKing.

I shoot both remington coreloct and the winchester supremes in 100gr and have never had a deer go more than 40 yrds. I killed a 7 point last year that weighed 223lbs and he made it all of 21 yrds from where I shot him.
