RE: 7mm wsm or 30-06 for deer
If you are serious about it being your " last" deer rifle, I would say go with the
30-06. Although the -06 may not be as exciting and sexy as the short mags are now, It will do every thing you ask it to do, and with the wide range of loads, a charging grizzly is about the only game on this side of the world that may make you wish you had something bigger.
You have probably noticed the advertising push for the short mags. These are very good rounds, and if you want to see the advantages you gain, just read the articles. There are two reasons I can think of as to why these ads are on about every other page of most hunting magazines.
1) They want to sell rifles, (and ammo.) obviously
2) They want a successful round.
The latter is the one I would worry about if I were buying my " last" deer rifle. Just because a certain round outperforms most of the others doesn' t make it successful. There are quite a few rounds of ammo you find on a ballistics table that look pretty good, but finding them sold anywhere is another story. Time will tell if these new exciting cartridges will make the cut. One thing is for certain.. the 30-06 is set in stone.

Anything in the 6mm to .30 caliber range should work just fine. The 7mms have the same sectional density as heavier .30 caliber bullets. So they tend to shoot a little flatter without sacrificing penetration. Otherwise, it' s a toss up probably. I' ve already made my choice, .30-06, because it' s cheaper mostly.
I owned a 7mm Remington Magnum once. It did pretty much what the .30-06 would do with half again the kick and more powder. I couldn' t justify hanging on to it so I sold it.
In a pinch you can take a deer with a .22 rimfire, although it' s usually not legal outside certain indigenous reserves and it might not be legal there but the people don' t care. They have neither the time nor the wherewithal to be concerned about game laws or discussions regarding the relative merits of high powered rifles. But their experience does put a little different perspective on such discussions sometimes.

I started with a .30/30 and I moved up to a .30-06. In 2000 I moved up to a .300 Weatherby. I like the .308 calibers, myself. Everyone's right about the .30-06 and ammo. You can get it at Kmart or WAl-Mart for $10 a box and, if you forget to bring your ammo to camp, you'll be able to find .30-06 ammo at the local general store.
