No-Shot Scope Change Technique: Fluke? Legit?

Haha, I never mind putting shots down range, in general...

The real reason I'm so intrigued was that I was wanting to change scopes on my wife's rifle, but didn't want to take time away from our short rifle deer season to go to the range. A buddy of mine said this technique would work, so we could do the swap without even firing the rifle.

I suppose it really would work pretty well for non-adjustable rings if you just took the top half of the rings off, put in the new scope of the same obj dia and torqued things back down... We're getting a new scope for the wife's back up coyote rig this winter, so we're going to put a new scope on it, then put THAT scope on her brush deer rifle, so I'll have at least two opportunities to test it out soon.
