The military sights depend on which 8x57 load they are calibrated for. Some are meant for the 154 gr spitzer that shoots at about 2950 fps and others are calibrated for the 198 gr spitzer at 2600 fps. Usually the elevation will be within 6" or so in either direction, which was considered good enough for battle sights whent he rifle was made. Some leaf sights start at 100 meters, other start at 300, and even 400 meters frot he lowest elevation. Most common are probably the 200 meter sights. The Idea with sights that shoot high at 100 meters such as sights calibrated at 400 meters was that an infantry soldier could aim roughly at the beltbuckle of an enemy soldier and be able to hit him out to 500 meters without worrying about sight adjustment. It just becomes more difficult when trying to pick off someone hiding behind cover, which is usually the job of a sniper or designated marksman anyhow.
