357 maximum
I've acquired a Savage 24vs O/U, 357 maximum over a 20 ga. for some late season hunting when several seasons collide ( deer, squirrel grouse, etc). Does anyone have any experience with the 357 maximum? I've done the online thing and found many favorable comments. I don't reload, so I have to rely on a source I found to purchase rounds. Using open sights I'm thinking maybe 100 yds max with my eyesight. Any thoughts?

you might wanna ask over at the H&R forums. this is a popular caliber in the single shot guns because its easy to ream out from the 357 magnum. http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.php?board=132.0

It's an ole' IMSA developed cartridge, just an extented .357 magnum case..it develops a little more velocity than the standard...more than enough for predators and small light weight deer at reasonable distances..it really sent those 180 grain full metal jacket at those rams on the IMSA war field..it sent them flying much better than the standard 158's

I have on in a 21" Contender barrel. Its a great shooter and at its best if you do handload. In a carbine shooting 180 gr. Hornady SSP bullets I get about 1900 FPS. This compares quite nicely to a 30-30 at out around 150 yds. Its not a long range gun but fun to shoot.
You can shoot 38 Specials and .357 magnum rounds out of it too. Just clean up the chamber before you go back to shooting .357 maxs again.

1) The max is a fantastic cartridge! Go here: http://357maximum.com/
2) If I'm not mistaken the particular gun you have is quite desirable and not one commonly seen = valuable.
