Help with a new scope
I recently won a new Weatherby Vanguard Stainless in .240 caliber, in a raffle. I exchanged that one for a .300 Winchester Magnum, which I thought would be useful for more game options. I am now in the market for a new scope to put on the gun. I read the previous thread poll about the scopes people use, which was useful.
My question is what are some things I should look for in a good quality scope? I know a lot of people say Zeiss and Swaroski, but I don't have that kind of money now and want to start shooting with it soon. I am looking to spend about $300 - $400.
Thanks.

I guess one of the big things is light transmission. A lot of scopes put a % to the amount of light they let through. The 300 to 400 $ range will land you a nice scope. Everyone has what they think is the best brand name. Important things to consider is the range of power you want. I normally use 3-9 scopes because it fills the bill of all hunting I do. Some people think they need 16 and 24 power scopes, and maybe some applications you do, but they are far from necessary. A lot of 1000 yard shooters use 10 and 12 power scopes.
I am a fan of Nikon scopes. The Monarch series is their flagship and the 2.5-10x should fit right into the top end of your price range. The Leupold Vari X II line fits into your price range too. Those are two excellent brand names that most people would say good things about for both of them. I have only been able to afford one Monarch Series, but I have a Buckmaster series and it is very nice. I use several Pro Staff series on my rimfire rifles with lots of success.

Total cost to my door was $379.00. I came in under the $400.00 max you posted ....Feel free to send me the difference OR donate it to NRA!!!!!

Put in your price range and take a look at what your money can get - then go to a shop and compare in person.................
