Here's the thing in late war vintage arms its not uncommon to find under and over bored rifles. 303s run from 312-316. The lands in the ***s were often as tight as 255 with a tight bore (end of the cutters life) at around 262 the bores would appear to be a worn 25 cal. The 6.5mm also was not well known I suspect in 1945 here in the states.

Mis-named cals 44 is 426. How do you get 303 out of 312. And the 8x57 runs both 318 and323-325. Our 32s also come 312 and 321.38s are 355 357 and 380 and lastly for me is the 327 mag that is a stretched 32 H and R mag both of which are 312.

I know that if you mic some ***anese ammo you'll find it to be loaded with .260 diameter ball. I've never known that ***anese barrels could be as tight as .255
I guess I better do a more careful check on mine.

And BTW, What's up with this PC filter that won't evenallow the entire proper name of ***anese to get through ... J A P A N E S E

Don't know about the filter just followed the pattern.

Remember that the lands are the narrowest part and are the drill dia.of the bore. In war production I wouldn't be surprized to find 255 lands w a 2645 bore in a low milage rifle. Ie , last hole for the drill and first grooves on a new button.
